L-Glutathione is an endogenous antioxidant consisting of three amino acids: cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine. L-Glutathione is produced in the liver, it catalyzes the formation of glutathione thioethers with xenobiotics, leukotrienes, and other molecules that have an electrophilic center in order to clear them from the body. It has a major role in reducing reactive oxygen species that are formed during cellular metabolism and respiratory burst. Because of this, glutathione plays an essential role in immune function and depletion of this antioxidant has been shown to be correlated with poorer immune function and increased susceptibility to infection due to the liver’s reduced ability to detoxify the body and relieve oxidative stress.
Reduced L-glutathione, also referred to as GSH is a thiol compound that is associated with carbohydrate metabolism and transportation in the body. A decrease of plasma GSH levels has been associated with multiple disease states such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, and HIV.
