Monobenzone is an anti-inflammatory agent and a 5-aminosalicylic acid derivative. Here at CareFirst Specialty Pharmacy, we have the ability to compound monobenzone in a variety of strengths for patient-specific requirements.

Pronunciation:

(mono BEN zone)

Drug Class:

5-Aminosalicylic Acid Derivative and Anti-Inflammatory Agent

Mechanism of Action:

Monobenzone is a prodrug and is converted by bacterial azoreduction to 5-aminosalicylic acid (mesalamine, active), 4-aminobenzoyl--alanine (inert), and their metabolites. It may decrease inflammation by blocking production of arachidonic acid metabolites topically in the colon mucosa.

Drug Interactions:

Consider therapy modification with the following medications: Varicella Virus-Containing Vaccines

Adverse Effects:

Common side effects you might experience: headache, stomach pain or diarrhea, upset stomach or throwing up, nose or throat irritation, signs of a common cold, join pain, feeling tired or weak.

Tell your doctor if you begin to have any of these symptoms following metformin administration:

  • Signs of an allergic reaction like a rash, hives, itching, trouble breathing, wheezing, tightness in chest and/or throat.
  • Signs of kidney problems like unable to pass urine, change in how much urine is passed, blood in urine, or big weight gain.
  • Liver problems such as dark urine, feeling tired, not hungry, upset stomach, or stomach pain, light-colored stools, yellow skin or eyes.

Administration:

Use this drug as ordered by your prescriber.

Dosing:

Contact your healthcare provider for specific dosing instructions.

Pregnancy:

Monobenzone’s active metabolite does cross the placenta. It is best to speak to your healthcare provider to see if benefits outweigh risks of using monobenzone while pregnant.

Breastfeeding:

Monobenzone’s active metabolite is present in breast milk. The decision to breastfeed while taking metformin should consider the following: risk of infant exposure, the benefits of breastfeeding to the infant, and benefits of treatment to the mother. Based on limited information, monobenzone is considered relatively compatible with breastfeeding.

Children/Pediatrics:

For children ≥5 years of age, monobenzone is relatively safe to use; however, dosing is subject to change based on age and weight.
