Cisapride is no longer commercially available in the US market. It is still used extensively in veterinary populations to treat constipation. Always follow your veterinarian’s instructions on how to administer this drug to your pet.

Pronunciation: (SIS-uh-pride)

Other Names: Propulsid

Drug Class: Prokinetic Agent

Mechanism of Action: Cisapride mainly acts as an agonist of the 5-HT 4 receptor in the gut. By stimulating the 5-HT 4 receptor, acetylcholine is released in the myenteric plexus increasing muscle contraction and therefore mobility in the gastrointestinal tract.

Drug Interactions: Cisapride is CONTRAINDICATED in use with other drugs that inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 or that prolong the QT interval. Serious cardiac arrhythmias including ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, torsades de pointes, and QT prolongation have been reported when administered with drugs that inhibit CYP3A4. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if it safe to take certain drugs with cisapride. Cisapride is CONTRAINDICATED for patients with disorders that predispose them to arrythmias. Drugs that are known to induce CYP3A4 will decrease cisapride levels in the blood and should be used with caution.

Adverse Effects: Common side effects are headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and flatulence. Serious but rare side effects include cardiovascular arrythmias, seizure, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, aplastic anemia, pancytopenia, and granulocytopenia.

Administration: Veterinary cisapride is administered orally.

Storage: Be sure to keep this medication away from children and pets.
