CareFirst Specialty Pharmacy understands the need for alternative dosing options for pets. Cats are notorious for refusing to swallow pills or a liquid medication and they’ll usually eat right around medication disguised in food. We offer options to make it easier to medicate pets like transdermal options for many actives in simple and easy to use applicators.

Transdermal simply means the application of a medicine or drug through the skin. The medication is specially compounded by our experienced compounding team into a cream/gel that can be easily applied to your pet’s skin, typically the medication is applied to the inside hairless flap of the ear.  This transdermal application allows some medications to be easily absorbed into the bloodstream without the pet or owner feeling unnecessary anxiety. In addition, because the medication bypasses the stomach and intestines, there is less chance of GI upset.

The transdermal medications are applied by the use of one of our metered dosage options (Topi- CLICK MICRO, EZ Derm Pen, or syringes) so the proper amount is used at the recommended time. Although transdermal medications are an excellent alternative for some veterinary drugs, not all medications can be compounded into transdermal form. Talk to your veterinarian if a transdermal option is right for your pet.
